چکیده
Abstract Soil fertility is key to sustainable intensification of agriculture and food security in sub-Saharan Africa. However, when soil nutrients are not adequately managed, smallholder farming practices slowly erode soils almost inert systems. This case study contributes the understanding such failures marginal areas. We integrate agronomic social sciences approaches explore links between households’ knowledge an ethnopedological perspective. interview 280 households two areas Ethiopian highlands, while collecting measures 11 parameters at their main field. By analyzing compositions tested households, we identify a novel measure management ability, which provides effective empirical characterization managing capacity household. Regression analysis used evaluate effects household on ability derived from laboratory analysis. Results highlight complexity transmission low-input remote able disentangle home learning dimension appraise how they can result virtuous vicious cycles ability. show that higher associated with farmers relying great extent acquired within household, as elaborated over years. Conversely, lower linked valuing substantially through neighbors gatherings.
